This biennale proposes a different format from its previous editions. Under Ivo Mesquitas' polemic curatorship, it raises the problem of the deep changes in contemporary art caused by economic and cultural globalization, and its popularization through exhibitions in museums, fairs and biennials "Why do we need museums that turn the new into collections of the past, Why do we need prices to asses value? or Why do we need theories to measure what is presented as art?" -- P. (6). Curators Ivo Mesquita, curator of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and appointed as artistic director of the event and Ana Paula Cohen have invited 40 artists from 20 different nationalities for this bienal exhibition.
